Cardiovascular and digestive doctors often recommend people to eat foods and yoghurt rich in dietary fiber. Eating more of these two foods in your daily diet may help reduce the risk of lung cancer, according to a new international study. The study was recently published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, volume of oncology.

The study, led by researchers from Vanderbilt University Medical Center in the United States, tracked the dietary fiber and yoghurt intake and health data of more than 1.44 million adults in Asia, the United States and Europe with an average age of about 56 years, and analyzed these data for nearly two years since 2017. The median follow-up time span for participants was 8.6 years.

Taking into account the habits related to lung cancer, such as smoking status, the researchers found that the incidence of lung cancer was 33% lower in the group with the most dietary fiber and yoghurt intake than in the group with the least intake. The researchers said in their paper that dietary fiber and yoghurt intake were negatively correlated with lung cancer incidence, respectively.

Regardless of the gender, smoking habits and cultural background of the studied individuals, eating more dietary fiber and yoghurt, whether alone or at the same time, showed the effect of reducing the risk of lung cancer, the researchers said. The reason may be that the food rich in dietary fiber contains prebiotics, which are some compounds that can be digested by intestinal flora; while yogurt is a common source of probiotics, prebiotics and probiotics can improve and regulate the composition and function of intestinal flora.

The researchers hope that this study will provide new ideas for the fight against lung cancer, and help to further explore the protection of intestinal microorganisms on human body.
